Engaging the community

Since inception, we have been closely involved in various community engagement projects. We have heavily invested finances and manpower in programmes like the Employee Volunteer Programme (EVP) which allows our staff to take time out to engage in various charitable initiatives.

Our main focus has been on environmental issues, especially those relating to health. This is handled by the AAR Beckmann Trust. We are proud to be part of the Billion Tree Campaign, whose website records over 10 billion planted trees in 170 countries!

Over the years, we have also come to be closely associated with other initiatives that impact on social wellbeing and improvement. Our community engagement initiatives include tree planting, charity marathons, food aid, donations and visits to prisons and hospitals, showing love to the needy, as well as donations to victims of natural disasters.

Trees for Health

The AAR Beckmann Trust has an ongoing project that encourages sustainable energy system, created by the planting of trees in schools, especially those situated close to slums. Trees are planted within and around the school boundaries to cater for the institutions’ energy needs and to support bi-annual de-worming programmes in the schools. These initiatives are instrumental in improving the status of health and academic performance of learners. The programmes are financed with savings generated from what the schools save on firewood cost, since they harvest their own. The money is used for the basic healthcare of the children.

Kenya

Standard Chartered Marathon
We have been the official sponsors for all medical and emergency services for the annual Standard Chartered Marathon since its inception in 2003. The marathon takes place every year in October and the proceeds from the marathon are used to help the blind or partially blind receive medical care and sight restoration surgeries where possible. Our staff participate in the race by running for this charitable cause as well as by volunteering their services as part of the medical and emergency teams spread out through the course of the marathon.

Food Aid

Our staff joined the country in the fight against hunger by giving generously, both in cash and kind, when the country was under the throes of a drought-induced famine in 2009. The staff’s commitment to this noble cause made it possible for us to gather over three tonnes of food items, which was donated to the Kenya Red Cross Society in February 2009.

Prison Visit

Our members of staff volunteered their time and resources November 7, 2009 to visit the Nairobi Remand Prison, which at the time had a population of 15,000 - both inmates and officers. The team contributed foodstuff, medical equipment, stationery and gave talks on the promotion of health, besides joining the inmates in a number of entertainment activities. This included talent shows, singing, dancing, basketball and health promotion presentations.

Tanzania

Showing Love to Cancer Patients

Our staff also donated food, washing and cleaning detergents, tissue papers etc.

Uganda

Landslide Victims
The Bududa landslide that swept down the slopes of Mt Elgon in Eastern Uganda on March 3, 2010 was a natural disaster that shook the country. With a death toll of over 300 people, the loss, pain and suffering the inhabitants of this area went through were unimaginable. When the Uganda Red Cross called for donations from the general public and organisations to help the landslide victims, collection points were created at our administration office in Uganda and all our health centres in the country to enable our staff make a difference and bring some relief to the lives of the victims.
